Even as an atheist, I love the depiction of the joy and sorrows of monastic life in this film. The acting a uniformly superb by all 8 men playing the monks. The cinematography was fabulous. A scene at dinner was shot with grace and brilliance as so often in french films. No easy villains or heroes here.

A movie about faith, about life's choices and consequences, about living life for something far more than self, about sacrifice. An very moving intelligent film that leaves you thinking about the what ifs? Eight incredibly faithful men who question their faith at a time of crises when their lives are threathened by terrorists and the army. These Christian men provide friendship and valuable services for the Muslim village around them. Is this enough for them to choose to stay and potentially sacrifice their lives or run from the terrorists and let them win? A timely moving film well written, acted and directed. You feel the simplicity of the monk's lives and see their struggle in their eyes.

'Of God's and Men' attempts to capture the deliberately slow yet highly focused life of a group of french monks in late 90s Algeria as their apparently simpatico coexistence with the Algerian village community is suddenly interrupted by the arrival of Islamist extremists.' of gods' is filled with so much subtlety that it borders on dull but it's in the extraordinarily ordinary routines and simply forthright spiritual convictions of this tight community of monks that tiny heroics are on beautifully refreshing display. I would conditionally recommend that others watch this film if for no other reason than the pure poetry of some of the film's best scenes (i.e. their 'last supper').

This is an excellent film. It is superbly crafted; outstanding acting, gorgeous cinematography and excellent directing. Whatever your belief, this is an important movie that challenges us to think differently about how we live in this world. A must see!

Fabulous acting and an interesting story but very heavy and somewhat slow. I loved the humanity expressed by these Catholic priests. It will probably get at least a nomination for best foreign film in this year's academy awards, it really is that good. It's definitely an adult film for those who appreciate the craft of film making. I will remember it for a long time.
